2013 North American Solid State Chemistry Conference

Jun 23
2013

Oregon State University
Corvallis, Oregon

The NASSC Conference is relatively intimate, attracting on average 100 - 120 participants. It is held semi-annually, the intent being to alternate with the Gordon Research Conference on Solid State Chemistry but differs from the GRC in the strong emphasis placed on providing graduate students and postdoctoral fellows an opportunity for oral presentations. Nonetheless, the informal ambience of the GRC is retained and every effort is made to enhance the opportunity for interaction among the attendees. This 2013 version will be the held in Oregon State University Campus located in the beautiful scenic Willamette Valley in Oregon.

Topics covered include:

  • 1. The synthesis of inorganic solids from bulk, single crystals to nanoscale materials.
  • 2. Structural characterization using traditional (X-ray & neutron diffraction,TEM, NMR) and more recent methods such as X-ray and neutron pdf.
  • 3. Physical properties, including transport, optical, dielectric, magnetic studies, etc.
  • 4. Materials for sustainable chemistry, energy storage or conversion – batteries, SOFC, ionic conductors, thermoelectric and magnetocaloric materials, among others.
  • 5. Experimental and theoretical studies of electronic structure.

Oxide Thin Films for Advanced Energy Applications

Jul 13
2014

Dr Stephen Skinner
Reader in Materials Chemistry, Imperial College London

Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa
Bonita Springs, Florida

Early Bird - 24/JAN/14
Talk Sumission - 31/JAN/14
Poster Submission - 12/MAY/14
Last Chance - 16/MAY/14

Oxide thin films are finding applications in a wide range of energy technologies, from ion conductors through photovoltaics and thermoelectrics to dielectrics and capacitors. Each of these energy technologies requires a thorough understanding of the materials chemistry of the oxide film and its interactions with the environment, substrate etc. Whilst in each technology area there may be materials differences, much of the materials chemistry optimisation may be common. For example, common families of oxides are employed, ABO3 perovskites in particular, and in this there are areas where discussion between user communities can prove mutually beneficial. It is the purpose of this meeting to foster an exchange of ideas between the relevant energy themes with the overall aim of provoking extensive discussion of the advances that materials chemistry can make in thin film energy applications.
